The Making of the Tintin Movie - The Story So Far

Spielberg has been a keen fan of The Adventures of Tintin comic books, which he discovered in 1981 when a review compared Raiders of the Lost Ark to Tintin. His secretary purchased him French-language editions of each book, but Spielberg did not need to understand them: he straight away fell madly in love with its art.

In the meantime, the comics' creator Herge, who hated the prior live action film versions and the cartoon, became fascinated by Spielberg.

Michael Farr, writer of Tintin: The Complete Companion, recalled Herge "thought Spielberg was the sole person who could ever do Tintin justice". Spielberg and his production partner Kathleen Kennedy of Amblin Entertainment were scheduled to rendezvous with Herge in 1983 whilst filming Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in London.

A three-year long option to film the comics was finalised in 1984, with Universal as distributor. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) writer Melissa Mathison was chosen to script a film where Tintin battles ivory hunters in Africa. Spielberg saw Tintin as "Indiana Jones for kids" and wanted Jack Nicholson to play Haddock but was unhappy with the script, Spielberg continued with production on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989 ). After the three years were up Spielberg lost the rights.

Warner Bros. bartered hard and long for the rights, but they could not guarantee the "creative integrity" the Foundation found in Spielberg. In 2004, the French mag Capital reported Spielberg was intending a trilogy primarily based on Secret of the Unicorn / Red Rackham's Treasure, The Seven Crystal Balls / Captives of the Sun and The Blue Lotus / Tintin in Tibet ( which aren't single stories, but both feature the Chang Chong-Chen personality ).

In the meantime, Peter Jackson, who had long been fascinated with 3-D filmmaking, was incredibly excited by current advances in the format. By luck they came together and Spielberg and Jackson concluded a live action adaptation would not do justice to the comic books and motion capture was the most effective way of representing Herge's Ligne Claire style of Tintin.

A week of filming occurred in Nov 2007 in Playa Vista, LA, California, on the stage where James Cameron shot Avatar. Andy Serkis had been cast, while Jackson stood in for Tintin.

The film was broadcast to Weta Digital, who produced a twenty-minute test reel that demonstrated a photorealistic outline of the characters.

An official statement about the collusion was made in May 2007, though both filmmakers had to attend to film it: Spielberg was preparing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (which was due for May 2008) and Jackson was planning The Lovely Bones
(October 2009 ).

In October 2007, Steven Moffat was announced to have been brought in to pen the screenplays for two of the Tintin films.

Moffat asserted he was "love bombed" by Spielberg into accepting the offer to draft the films, with the director promising to shield him from studio interference with his writing. Moffat finished the 1st script, but could not complete the second thanks to the 2007/2008 Writers Guild of America strike. He then became producer of Doctor Who, leading Spielberg and Jackson (the latter of whom is big fan for the show) to permit him to leave and fulfil his requirement to the series.

It'll take 30 days to shoot each film; Spielberg will film his in LA whilst Jackson will film his in New Zealand. An online connection between Weta in New Zealand will permit Spielberg to view the animated version of his film whilst shooting in LA.

But in August 2008, a month before principal photography would have started, Universal turned down their option to co-produce the film, quoting the low ticket office of Monster House and Beowulf and the directors' common request for 30% of the gross. Paramount Pictures (DreamWorks' distributor) was hoping to partner with Universal on the project having spent $30 million on pre-production.

Spielberg was uncomfortable that Paramount would have to fully fund the Tintin Movie, because he was leaving the studio. He gave a ten-minute presentation of footage, hoping they would approve for filming to begin in October. Paramount offered to produce if the directors opted out of their gross percentage deals: Spielberg and Jackson declined and looked for new options. American Inventor TV Show - Try These Inventions

When I saw the "American Inventor" program, I immediately loved the show. It's a parade of ingenuity - and sometimes silliness and total ignorance of markets. Watching some of the inventors come onto that stage, I realized I wouldn't want to be a judge on the show for anything. The judges face the constant choice of either giving false hope or destroying dozens of people's hope each night.

For those of you who haven't seen the show, it is essentially a bunch of amateur inventors demonstrating their inventions and ideas in front of a panel of judges (it's on ABC). Each of the four judges say either yes, and the inventor goes to the next round, or no, and he or she doesn't. The "no" votes are a lot more common than the "yes", especially with the many inventors of new kinds of toilets.

Now, apart from avoiding more toilet inventions, what can you do to improve your odds of making it to the next round on American Inventor? Three quick tips:

1. Be Really Ready! You'll have so very little time to demonstrate your idea or invention, so be prepared to say and show everything in a couple minutes.

2. Show It In Action! A builder with a new form of construction blocks (think full-sized homes made of locking plastic blocks) almost lost out because he was talking about the idea and showing blueprints. He almost had to beg for the third "yes" vote to move on. What should he have done? Walk into that room and start building with the blocks, and then say, "This is how we'll soon be building homes." This approach would get their attention.

3. Prepare Facts And Statistics. Many inventions have lost out because the judges thought their was no market for them. Why did they think this? It seems that two of the judges (you need three "yes" votes) have never ridden a bicycle or done yard work. Naturally they don't know that a device for hanging bicycles or an easily-turned lawn mower would sell. Give them the stats: "More than one million people hang their bikes in garages and sheds from dangerous old-fashioned hooks. This is the better alternative..."

Two Inventions To Take On American Inventor

Hey, I don't want to be the guy who spends $20,000 and four years to create a prototype that gets voted down in two minutes flat. I just like dreaming up the ideas. Therefore, here are two ideas which I won't be making into new inventions, and are free for you to develop and patent.

The Talking Pet. Imagine four colored circular pads on a floor mat. Your dog steps on the blue pad and a speaker says "I want to go outside now." He steps on the yellow one and you hear, "I'm hungry now; please feed me." The red one? "Can you please give me some water?" I leave the last pad up to you. This will take some training, but then the average dogs quickly learns to come and get you for a trip outside, so it can learn this.

The Super-Sanitary Toilet. They'll hate you for this one, but have you ever seen how much fine mist goes up in the air when you flush? This explains the fecal coliform bacteria found on everything tested (including your toothbrush) in the average bathroom. Show this and the American Inventor judges will be ready for your solution: A toilet that automatically flushes when you close the lid - and only when you close the lid. This keeps the bacterial-mist from getting up in the air and all over.

The famous movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind features the Devils Tower. This distinctive mountain landmark is hard to miss.

Richard Dreyfuss' character sees Devils Tower everywhere he looks. He forms his mashed potatoes into something that looks like it. His wife and children don't like it. He becomes more and more obsessed with the mountain. He paints it and then really goes nuts. When he brings in piles of dirt from the yard to create a scale replica in his living room, his wife and kids leave him. Many people remember this scene.

Eventually Richard's character travels to Wyoming to see the real Devils Tower. Despite warnings from the military to stay away, he sneaks up to the mountain. He becomes witness to something wonderful. People use a big organ to communicate with aliens, who eventually land. People who have been lost for years, not aged a day, come out of the huge ship. Richard's character is amongst those who choose to travel with the aliens back to their home planet. Given the way Hollywood makes sequels, it's surprising this open ending didn't spawn a second movie. It still might. There are extra scenes in some versions that show the interior of the vessel. But these weren't very well done.

Back to the real Devils Tower. It's home is Wyoming. It's a volcano neck. Another name for it is a lava neck. It's a result of magma flowing out of a volcano's vent. It's generally the sign of an active volcano. Some geologists dispute that Devils Tower is such a formation.

The Indians made a legend about the formation of Devils Tower. Some Indian sisters were walking in the wilderness, picking flowers, when they came upon some bears. The bears chased them. The Great Spirit helpd the girls by raising up the land upon which they stood. The bears kept trying. Every time they made it nearly to the top, they slid back to the bottom. The distinctive indentations in the sides of the tower come from the bears' claws.

A Sioux legend involves two boys far from home. A giant bear called Mato came upon them. Its claws, the size of tepees, could rip the boys apart and allow the bear to eat them. They prayed to the Creator to give them assistance. He did, raising the ground beneath them. Mato tried to climb up from all sides, but found it impossible. The marks from its great claws can still be seen.

The cartoon version also incorporated elements of the horned devil. The animal is somewhat dog-like. Their tail is almost as long as the rest of the body, and is also where the animal stores fat. Thus a thin tailed one is generally unhealthy.

New American Idol Season Is Exciting

Okay, so I'm probably the one of the few people who don't really get into American Idol. I remember when it first started and I was so surprised by the show thinking that it would be a flop. By season 2 I realized I was completely wrong. Every year the show seems to get bigger, and more copycat shows come out like Dancing with the Stars. Why good old television can't make a comeback I don't know.

Now 7 seasons later and it's bigger than ever. It's a very coveted time slot for advertisers to get their products in since it's audience runs the gamut from teens to grandmas.I have to admit though that this season may end up being a guilty pleasure. My girlfriend is an addict and generally once I watch 4 or 5 shows I get hooked on something.

The best part is the early shows when people perform and make themselves look foolish. By this time around those people who sound horrible on the show must just be looking for their 15 minutes of fame. There are a few really tallented people on this season including Michael Johns and Kristy Lee Cook.

Although I do think there have been a lot of talented people who have been discovered on the show, I feel the premise of the show kind of sucks. There are so many talented musicians out there trying to make it and they can't even get record contracts, but here these so called "idols" are getting everything handed to them.Almost everyone who has ever won the show is a bum now, excecpt Kelly Clarkson from season 1. I think this may be my year to come around to the phonomia that is American Idol, and if not I know I will love people making themselves look stupid early in the season.

It is surprising how Jim Carey manages to always find some sort of niche for his films. He surprises me as an actor as he can apply himself into so many different roles. He is arguably one of the most versatile actors of this generation. When you compare films such as 'Eternal Sunshine for the spotless mind' and 'Ace Ventura' it really doesn't seem as though it is the same actor doing it and that is what makes him special. I have seen the 'Yes man' film and it is really funny. Jim Carey plays an average man with an obsession of saying 'no' to people. After his friend takes him to a local rally about being positive, Jim Carey's character is then compelled to say 'Yes' to every opportunity that comes up. It is a light hearted and funny film and I would recommend anyone out there to go and see it!

'Dark Knight' is best film of 2008.

Today it was announced that the latest installment of the Batman films, 'Dark Knight' is to be added to the best films category of 2008. It is also up for an oscar nomination for best visual effects film of 2008. The film has broken so many box office records that people have started to loose count. The 'Dark Knight' hosts a vast array of Hollywood stars including, Cristian Bale, Micheal Cain, Gary Oldman and of course the late Heath Ledger. Heath Ledger himself is up for a posthumous Golden Globe this week for his hypnotic performance as the Joker in the Dark Knight as I think it is duly justified as his acting was truly mesmerizing.

The latest Batman film is by far my favorite so far and the Director Chis Nolan has done a fantastic job is putting this masterpiece of a film together. Everything was spot on and the film was well taken by the audience. I think I speak for everyone when I say that the general public are eager to see when the next installment of Chris Nolan's Batman will come out.

The award for best film in 2008 will finally be decided in early 2009 at a high class luncheon in Los Angeles however the nominations list has already been compromised with the 'Dark Knight', 'Wall-E' and 'Quantum of Solace'. The winner of the coveted nominations will obviously be crowned the best film of 2008. Additionally, the nominations for the oscars will be announced soon with the final winners being declared in early February 2008. 'Dark Knight' has already qualified for one of these awards and I have no doubt in my mind that the film will surely qualify for some more as it truly is one the best films of our generation and Heath Ledger's performance deserves all the praise that it gets.

The new Batman film, ‘The Dark Knight’ has been nominated as one of the best movies of 2008 by the American Film Institute. Many other films were included in the top running including, Iron Man, and drama hit, Frozen River, but the top ten choices will be honoured at an exquisite luncheon on January 9th at an unnamed event in America.
Additionally, The Dark Knight has been named as one of the 15 semi-finalists for best visual effects Oscar which is an incredible achievement. Other nominations include the second instalment of the Chronicles of Narnia film, Prince Caspian and the latest James Bond film, Quantum of Solace. Last week the late Heath Ledger was nominated for a posthumous Golden Globe award for his incredible role as the infamous Joker in the Dark Knight. The role he played was absolutely incredible and there has been nothing but constant appraise for his performance.
I think it is duly justified that this film be awarded for an Oscar as the whole cast performance was simply astounding and deserve every award out there. Each actor’s performance was incredible and it is now one my favourite films of all time. It was so different to any other Batman film I have seen before and it was taken well by the audience. The casting and the commitment by the Director, Chris Nolan was incredible and it made an amazing film to watch. There is no doubt in my mind that the performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker will live on in our memories for years to come and although it is truly sad that he has passed away we will always remember his as one of the best actors of our time.
I don’t think this will be the last that we have heard of the Dark Knight film. I am sure that this film will win countless other awards and accolades. I am very eager to see whether it will last till February for the Oscar nominations as it truly deserves it.

I'm not usually a Will Ferrell fan, to be quite frank, I find him and his characters annoying. I actually saw this film for the first time this year, at a friend's house. Besides, it actually is fun to watch a really tall guy wearing a ridiculous looking green suit and tights running around New York City. Yeah, this is not a family film - but it is pretty funny.

Who Created Tintin? Georges Prosper Remi As Herge The Middle Period

As news of the Tintin movie to be directed by Steven Spielberg reaches fever pitch people will want to know about Tintin and his creator Georges Prosper Remi who used the pen name Herge. Hergé reached a watershed in his work around his 30th birthday and the release of Tintin and the Blue Lotus. The Blue Lotus was released in 1936 and was the fifth Tintin adventure. The end of the fourth album Cigar of the Pharaoh had led to a mention that Tintin would be off to China in his next adventure.

A University of Leuven professor one father Gosset got in touch with Hergé and asked for the illustrator to be perceptive about how he approached China in his next album. Gosset was the chaplain of the university’s Chinese students and introduced Hergé to a young Chinese sculptor called Chang Chon-jen who resided at the Brussels Académie des Beaux-Arts.

Hergé and Chang instantly made a connection. Chang introduced Hergé to Chinese history, culture and techniques of Chinese art that left a lasting impression on Hergé. In the Blue Lotus Hergé endeavored to become more correct in detailing the places that Tintin visited. The bond formed between these two artists is now cemented in history as Hergé called one of his characters “Chang Chong-Chen” in the young sculptor’s honor. Chang Chong-Chen is a young Chinese boy who befriends Tintin, with the character discarding some of the more outrageous fabrications about Chinese culture.

The bond formed with Chang resulted in Hergé heightened comprehension of the problem with colonialism and particularly Japan’s horrific assaults into China. A theme of anti-imperialism can clearly be read in the Blue Lotus which was contrary to common western beliefs that were compassionate to Japan and its colonial enterprise. Hergé took a lot of flack for the views from Japanese dignitaries in Belgium but history has shown that the Blue Lotus was vindicated.

In a sad tale after finishing his studies Chang went back to China and the two friends lost contact after the Japanese invasion and subsequent civil war at it was forty years before they met again.

Hergé was going to see a modification in Tintin’s style again. This was through necessity rather than choice. In September 1st 1939 the Nazi’s invaded Poland and Hergé as a reserve lieutenant had to stop his work on the Tintin adventure The Land of Black Gold. Le Petit Vingtième was closed down and Hergé found himself writing for Le Soir the mouthpiece of the Nazi occupational forces. Hergé began to write The Crab with the Golden Claw which was to be the first of six albums written during the war.

Hergé was unable t finish The Land of Black Gold due to its anti-fascist undertones. The war was to continue in earnest and led to Hergé changing his style. A paper shortage led to him having to publish Tintin daily in a three or four frame strip, rather than the two full pages every week as when he had worked for Le Petit Vingtième. The meant Hergé had to create drama at the end of each strip rather than the end of each page. Hergé by necessity introduced more frequent quips and a more rapid hustle of action.

Hergé had been quite political at times in his earlier albums but now under Nazi occupation this was no longer possible. The Tintin adventures turned to escapism with escapades to meteorites (The Shooting Star), a treasure hunt ((The Secret of the Unicorn) and a expedition to unravel an ancient Inca curse in (The seven Crystal Balls and Prisoner of the Sun).

Hergé now placed more emphasize on characters and plots and led to some of Tintin’s greatest characters being introduced to the globe. The upcoming Tintin movie trilogy has heightened interest in all things Tintin. Hergé the creator of the well known comic character Tintin will once again be in the mainstream consciousness. Hergé was the pen name of Georges Prosper Remi who was both writer and illustrator of all 23 Tintin albums dying before he could finish the 24th Tintin and the Alpha-Art.

Georges Prosper Remi was born in Etterbeek in Belgium in 1907 and was to become the father of the ligne claire style of illustration that was to influence artists such as Warhol. Remi was a keen sketcher from an early age and his primary school books were filled with doodles of the invading Nazi regime who occupied Belgium during the First World War. Remi was a natural and throughout his life had no real formal training apart from a few lessons taken at l’ecole Saint-Luc during his teenage years.

On reaching the age of 13 Remi studied at the college Saint-Boniface being taught by Catholic priests and joining the Boy Scout troop of the school. He was to be given the moniker “Renard curieux” (Curios fox). It was where Remi was to initially experience his illustrations being published firstly in Jamais assez, the school scout paper and then later to a bigger audience in Le Boy-Scout Belge, the scout monthly magazine where the pseudonym Hergé first appears.

It is within this environment that many believe heavily influenced Remi’s work and especially the character that became Tintin. It is clear that the ethics of the scout movement and the traveling Remi did with his group make up a great part of Tintin’s spirit.

In 1925 Hergé went to work for Le Petit Vingtième a Catholic newspaper edited by an abbot Norbert Wallez. Hergé was to publish his first cartoon series the following year, The Adventures of Tortor again in Le Boy-Scout Belge. It wasn’t until 1928 when Hergé was put in charge of producing material for the children supplement of Le Petit Vingtième that Hergé really came into his own.

Hergé began illustrating the adventures of Flup, Nenesse, Pousette and Cochonnet written by a member of the sports staff. Fortunately for the rest of the world Hergé wasn’t particularly enamored by this chain of events. It led to Wallez asking Hergé to create a young hero that would fight good all over the world and be a reporter to boot. Hergé filled with brio created a comic strip of his own influenced by the American innovation of using speech bubbles to depict the words coming out of the characters mouths.

Hergé created the now legendary Tintin in the Land of the Soviets that appeared in Le Petit Vingtième in January 1929 and ran until may 1930. The strip was a wonderful adventure through the Soviet Union, the young reporter Tintin with his trusty fox terrier Snowy. The character of Tintin is also said to be inspired partly by Remi’s brother Paul who was an officer n the Belgium Army. Tintin was a popular stip from day one. Remi was to produce other comic strips such as Quick and Flupke but Tintin was the one character that was to make him.

In June 1930 Tintin began his second adventure, Tintin in the Congo (which was at the time a Belgian colony) to be followed by Tintin in America and the Cigars of the Pharaoh.

The first Tintin adventures would take about a year to complete and then would be released by the Casterman publishing house. Hergé would continue to revise the adventure in subsequent editions, including later turning them into colour. These early works were also to age quickly as the century moved at break net pace with Tintin in the Congo having to be revised due to the fact Tintin in the original tale is seen giving a lesson to native students in a missionary school and proclaims “My dear friends, today I am going to talk about your country: Belgium” that was later edited into a math lesson.

Hergé soon began to learn some of life truths as he got older and there is definite water shed in his work around the time of his 30th birthday when he introduced Tintin and The Blue Lotus to the world. The other single volume adventures would at first appear a little too slender to create into a film. It is believed that Spielberg and Jackson have yet to confirm which albums they will work on all though speculation has increased as to who will playing which Tintin role. The Tintin Movie Geared For Success With Jackson And Spielberg On Board

Tintin is finally being made into a movie. Tintin is being turned into movie by the dream pairing of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. Spielberg and Jackson will actually be making three Tintin movies back to back as Jackson accomplished with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

The films will be shot back to back for logistical and financial expediency; they will come rattling off the production line in 2009. Spielberg has been a Tintin fan since he was a small boy and the upcoming filming brings an end to a 25 year mission to get a film made. Spielberg was first approached back in 1982 by Georges Remi (who initials GR were reversed to form the pen name Herge). Remi sent out emissaries and it resulted in a three year option for Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment in 1984. It was reported that after the success of ET Spielberg hired Melissa Mathison who helped write ET and was then Harrison Ford's wife to compose a an African adventure in which Tintin overcame ivory hunters in a classic Tintin yarn.

This would be a role reversal for Tintin who had in a previous tale cheerfully blown up a rhinoceros with a stick of dynamite. It could never quite come to fruition. One of the main reasons for this was due to the fact that Spielberg never believed he had the technology to pull off his vision satisfactorily. It was also at the same time Spielberg turned to his attention to his next undertaking that of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Rumour has it that some of the story lines for The Last Crusade were taken form the Tintin movie penned by Mathison.

Spielberg has also hinted that Indiana Jones chronicles were very much influenced by Tintin's boy-scout ethos. It has been noticed that the whole idea of creating a Tintin movie has resurfaced at the same time Spielberg has been absorbed in the fourth installment of Indiana Jones.

During those years when Amblin Entertainment had the option for the Tintin movie there were rumours about who would play Tintin. First there was obviously Henry Thomas who had starred in ET. Next there was a young Leonardo DiCaprio and then unbelievably Christopher Lambert and Jean-Claude Van Damme. As for the role of Captain Haddock the names of Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman and Richard Gere were mooted. Then for the role of Bianca Castafiore the opera dive and the only major role for a female was linked to Courtney Love. It is now known that Spielberg and his people never truly got close to making the movie back then.

Although there was a lot of rumour and speculation the only truth is that Spielberg's interest did wane and other directors came into the equation to make the film. Claude Berri (who had produced a successful live action version of Asterix) was rumoured to be interested as was Roman Polanski. Then Warner Brothers entered the chase. The Herge Foundation declined as they Warner Brothers failed to impress due to guarantees about creative integrity. When Warner Brothers left the scene the project was back at square one.

Spielberg and Jackson then got together and went into discussions with Moulinsart who in the intervening time took over the rights to Tintin. Eventually a deal was struck after long discussions. Spielberg and Jackson are both set to direct one film each with the third to be decided at a later date.

Jackson's special effects tam Weta Digital have been working on using 3-D animation to bring the junior reporter and his trusty dog Snowy to life. Jackson Weta effects house back in New Zealand took more than a year to knock-up a 20 minute demo that wowed backers. Jackson said "We're making the character look photorealistic - the fibres of their clothing, the pores of their skin and each individual hair. It is possible that the work, certainly the first one will start next year".

This will be when Spielberg finishes Indiana Jones 4 and Jackson his adaptation of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones. Jackson's input with the effects made possible by Weta has invigorated Spielberg who is a lifelong Tintin fan. Spielberg said "We want Tintin's adventures to have the reality of a live-action film, and yet Peter and I felt that shooting them in a traditional live-action format would simply not honour the distinctive look of the characters and the world Herge created."

The deal allows them to use a back catalogue of 23 albums Herge published between 1929 and 1976. Speculation is now rife as to which album will be turned into a Tintin movie first. The upcoming Tintin Movie trilogy follows a recent trend over the last 5 years to turn popular/cult comics into movie. There reasons for this are that it allows movie studios to tap into existing audiences with fans of these comic characters along with the added benefit that the lead character of any movie will be already in the consciousness of much of the movie going public at some level.

The use of comic books for the source of a movie also allows for special effects to be used in such a manor that they cannot be questioned as part of the integrity of the film as often this is the only way to portray the comic character in the most authentic way.

The problem through is that many films get caught up in the largess of special effects and the movies themselves suffer as result as the plot lines and acting in those movies are often very weak.

This leads to some very poor movies getting made that benefit no one from the movie houses involved, the actors involved in the film and it certainly adds no benefit to the much loved comic character that has been portrayed in the film.

The recent spate of films that have angered many comic fan purists include adaptations of the comic/graphic novel characters such as The Punisher, The Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze) and The Daredevil.

These comic/graphic novel characters were successful incarnations that captured the hearts and minds of comic fans and provided an escape to many. Then to see these characters butchered in films that many see as both movie studios and comic creators “cashing in” leave true fans angry and cold.

The question being asked by many is whether a Tintin movie should be made. I have added this debate to my site in a democracy poll I have done. The common consensus is that many true fans do not want to see a movie being made. The Herge creation that is Tintin is a much loved European character and one that many feel should not be adapted especially by Hollywood. The illustrations in the adventure albums drawn by Herge are true works of art that have inspired the likes of Warhol. I believe they can be and that the Tintin movie venture should be embraced. The fact that it has taken 25 years to get to the position now with Steven Spielberg involved in the project is a plus. Spielberg first agreed to create a Tintin movie back the 1980’s and was given the rights to bring the much loved Walloon character to the big screen. At the time Spielberg felt that he could get the look of the movie to be close enough to the feel of the book. The project took a back burner and Spielberg option for the movie ran out.

In the meantime there have been many people linked with the Tintin movie but it could never get made. It took until this year for another deal to be struck. Spielberg is involved once more along with Peter Jackson of Lord of the Ring’s fame.

The character Gollum was created by Weta using motion capture techniques on actor Andy Serkis then using key frame animation and subsurface scattering rendering techniques enabled the first completely convincing portrayal of an animated humanoid in a feature film. This technology will bring a realistic portrayal of Tintin to the big screen. Jackson said “We’re making the character look photo realistic – the fibers of their clothing, the pores of their skin and each individual hair. It is possible that the work, certainly the first one will start next year”.

The people at Weta devoted one whole year to make sure the look of the Tintin albums were translated to the screen and the 20 minute demo they produced wowed the backers of the Tintin Movie trilogy. The story linking Thomas Sangster to the Tintin Movie first appeared from what I can tell in the British press in the form of a story in the Daily Mail that later gained slightly more credence when it appeared in the better thought of Daily Telegraph.

The Telegraph wrote "Thomas Sangster, 17, who played the role of Liam Neeson's step son in Love Actually, had originally sent an audition tape to the Hollywood director hoping to snare a role in The Talisman, a project which never got off the ground

Instead Spielberg realised he had found the boy who could play Tintin, the young adventurer created by Belgian cartoonist and writer Georges Prosper Remi, better known by his pen name of Hergé."
Taking into consideration the wording of the Telegraph article that this is still no more than a rumour I have looked into other sources including the obvious such as IMDB and cannot confirm for sure that Thomas Sangster is going to play Tintin.

Thomas Sangster is actually the cousin of Hugh Grant and lives in South London with his family. Sangster first appeared in the BBC television film The Adventure of Station Jim. He has developed quite reputation and won the award "Best Actor in a mini-series" at the Monte Carlo Film festival for his role in Entrusted. Thomas Sangster came to the movie going public's attention though for his much acclaimed performance as Liam Neeson's stepson in Love Actually.

The BBC TAX

I have to disagree about the BBC. The arguments against a TV licence are as follows. My answers follow the (numbered) quotes from the Facebook homepage.

1-- Like the Poll Tax, the TV License takes no account of your ability to pay, nor how much (if any) of the service you use. It hits the lowest incomes hardest by percentage of income.

You could argue the same about food, drink, cleaning products, petrol, holidays, cars, trousers or virtually anything else. In fact, income tax is the ONLY thing that takes account of ability to pay. Everything else just costs what it costs. So the TV license fee follows the same pattern as 99.9999999% things in the universe. I don't think this is a strong argument. Plus, as a percentage of income it's fallen massively since the 50s. It's now about 0.01% of average income, whereas it used to be about 0.07% - not a huge amount in either case, but definitely cheaper (in real terms) now. In fact, it costs slightly more than 38p per day. Crippling? I don't think so!

2-- When it started, there was only one use for a TV set, and only one broadcaster so a kitty type setup was fine, this has fragmented so much now that the BBC are a minority entertainment service that you can't unsubscribe from.

Actually in the UK more people watch BBC programmes than any other channel. You may not like their programming in all cases (I don't either) but that doesn't mean your argument is correct. They're not minority. They may not please everyone, but they have the largest share of audience, consistently, across all age and social groups. Fact.

3-- The BBC forces itself onto the airways and we are required to pay for its upkeep regardless of whether or not we watch it. £139.50 is too much to pay for reality tv, vapid sitcoms and endless repeats.

Advertisers increase the cost of their products to pay for the adverts they show. The average cost of an Audi car, for instance, would fall by £7,000 if they did absolutely no marketing. You pay £7,000 per Audi, just for them to advertise to you. The same applies to everything you see advertised on TV. In 2000 the average ITV viewer paid more than £1000 per year in extra costs on products they saw advertised. Comparatively, the BBC is cheap! And vapid sitcoms? Yes. But also David Attenborough, The Office, BlackAdder, Fawlty Towers, Boys from the Blackstuff, Simon Schama, the best news channel in the world (without a doubt)... stuff you simply WOULD NOT see on a commercial channel. The BBC chase ratings, but they also produce masses of FANTASTIC material aimed at minorities who would otherwise be totally ignored.

4-- At worst a service that you never use. We are forced to pay for a TV Licence, what ever happened to free choice?

True, that's the strongest argument. But have you REALLY never watched ANYTHING on BBC, or listened to the radio? Do you ONLY watch ITV or Sky? I doubt it. And if you do, you're missing out on Dr Who and Joolz Holland (to say the least).

5-- This is a complete monopoly (For example, I am a avid sports fan, i pay my money to Virgin media and the only TV I watch is Setanta, Sky Sports and Eurosport. But the nice people at the BBC think its fair to force me to pay them for channels im not using)

Well, you only have yourself to blame. In 1980 all sport was shown for FREE as part of your license fee (which was about £60 back then). Now you pay about £40 PER MONTH on Sky, Setanta, etc - and extra for premiership games, top movies etc. If nobody had signed up for Sky, the BBC would still show everything you want. You VOLUNTEERED to pay £45 per month for something you were already getting for FREE. Is it the BBC's fault that you made a stupid decision? No, it isn't.

6-- You wouldn't pay £140 a year to tax a car that you dont use would you? (answer yes to this question and you are a moron and i will gladly let you pay my car tax)

I repeat, do you NEVER watch Dr Who, Extras or the news? Never? EVER?! And before you call us idiots, remember who's volunteering to pay £40 a month for something the BBC used to give you for free.

7-- Every other channel funds itself by advertising, so why cant the BBC do the same. They are already screwing us over by showing BBC programs on Dave and the UKTV Network. Where they recieve money from advertisements. They can't have it both ways.

Why can't they have it both ways? I mean, the government has prevented them from increasing the licence fee, so they raise the money they need commercially. Isn't that what you argue for? OK, you may dislike the license fee in the first place, but it is INCREDIBLY cheap (38p per day), and provides 20+ TV channels, 50+ radio stations and the single best website in the world (it was voted best last year). If they didn't sell old programmes to Dave, the cost of the license fee would rise to a terrifying 44p per day (ooh, how will we cope, 44p for about 250 hours of new programming every day!).

You should also consider this: advertising revenues on TV are plummeting. ITV lost 30% of its income over the last 5 years. If the BBC had to fund 250 hours of programming per day by ADVERTS, the few adverts there are would be spread thinner - especially as the BBC has the most popular channels. So the income of ALL TV would fall, and programmes would suffer enormously - not just the BBC, but everybody.

8-- Im not saying get rid of the BBC, Just want them to fund themselves or allow us to opt out of their service.

I agree you should be able to opt out. But if you do, your radio, TV and Internet hardware would have to be amended to prevent you from accessing BBC content. And the cost of doing that would be prohibitively high. Can you imagine what you'd pay to have a thing fitted to your car to STOP you from getting BBC traffic news? Or what you'd pay to STOP your TV, digibox, Sky receiver, walkman, PC and every other device from getting Radio 1? It would be massively expensive. So yes, opting out is a good idea, but utterly impractical. Similarly, I'd like to opt out of paying towards the Iraq war by having my taxes cut. But it's never going to happen, is it?

9-- Why not have a system like PBS, where the rich and famous provide donations or a system that allows those on a lesser income to pay less? (can be done by the individuals tax code/band) - I am sure the likes of Beckham, Bono, Elton John to name a few, have got money to throw around. How about they contribute to the devices that got them their money in the first place?

So your argument is that you don't like paying for TV, so you'd like someone else to pay your share instead? And the richest people are mostly city traders - how does the BBC make them rich, exactly? It's just not a proper solution. And the poor pay less? Yes, I agree - but it is 38p per day, as I mentioned. That's less than the cost of a Twix. How poor do you have to be before the "lower" threshold hits? So poor you can't afford a Twix? Seems a bit extreme.

I can see why people dislike paying a license fee, but absolutely none of the arguments against it take into account what the costs of abolition would be.

Frankly if you want to save money, start pushing for government to abolish ALL taxation except income tax. Income tax is the only truly fair tax, but it's been slashed (to make tax look low) while other unfair tax has been increased. Scrap road fund license, TV license, VAT and all other taxes, and increase income tax by 5%. It would be a fair reflection of people's ability to pay, and nobody would moan about paying for the BBC any more.

Zorba the Greek is a film from 1964 based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis.Anthony Quinn played the title role and this became arguably his most famous part.

Direction was by Michael Cacoyannis and Alan Bates played the young Englishman.The film was shot in Crete and is based around the small village of Chania.

The film plot was fairly straightforward with Bates meeting Quinn whilst travelling to Crete. They form a strong friendship and it is over the days and weeks ahead that Quinn displays his joie de vivre and shows Bates many valuable lessons which will stay with him all his life.

The music score was a tremendous hit with the theme song, Sirtaki, being memorable.

Artistically the film was well received with:-

Tintin was first introduced to the world in Tintin in the Land of the Soviets. Tintin was the creation of George Remi under he pen name Herge and was first introduced in a Belgium paper in 19289-1930.

Tintin and the Land of the Soviets was a political satire that poked fun at the Soviets claims to having a thriving economy and found an audience due to many people’s unease with the Soviet Empire. Remi himself had distrust for the Soviet Empire.

The Tintin comic series have an almost formulaic feel about it. Most of the books deal with Tintin having to solve a mystery of some kind whilst also having to write a story for his paper.

Cliffhanger was released in 1993 and features Sylvester Stallone in the lead role. This action movie was instrumental in resurrecting his career after the hiatus of Rambo. The plot is predictable:-

Stallone as Gabe Walker, a rock climber who has been traumatised after being unable to prevent a friend falling to her death.

Several television spin-offs have been created in the quarter-decade since the original show's transmission, including the popular Beast Wars saga, and the not-as-popular "Unicron Trilogy", but they have struggled to capture the imagination of more recent generations of children in quite the same way as the original.

In 2007, however, the release of Michael Bay's live-action Transformers movie sparked Transformers mania for a new generation, as well as giving older fans the movie that they had been waiting for for years. While controversial amongst some of the "hardcore" fanbase, the realistic design and engineering of the new Transformers combined with incredible CGI brought the robotic giants to life like never before. The resulting hype has made millions for the various companies involved, including Paramount and Hasbro, and reintroduced Transformers as a major entertainment brand.

To tie in with the movie release, Cartoon Network began working on a new animated series based on the Transformers line, originally labelled Transformers: Heroes. Almost everyone I know who has studied martial arts got a start watching kung fu films. The most obvious and most classic ones are the martial arts movies done by the late Bruce Lee. His movies not only had excellent and unprecedented fight scenes, but they also had interesting plots and sinister villains as well.

Of course, There are plenty of other martial arts movies besides the kung fu films such as movies about tai chi moves. America has been making fighting films for years. Well, there are the Karate Kid movies. Anyone who grew up in the 80s remembers these films. Their style are unique and that make it interesting. Karate is pretty straightforward, and doesn't necessarily make for great film. In the Karate Kid movies, however, they really made it work very well.

Some of the more creative and interesting movies belong to the demostration catergory. I first saw a tai chi chuan moves demonstration video about a year ago, and since then I have been watching every single one I can get my hands on. Season Seven of Dancing With the Stars has now arrived, and the popular show is already rife with controversy. Roughly one third of the contestants have been eliminated, but surprisingly, 82-year-old Oscar-winning actress Cloris Leachman is still in the running despite a weak showing. Cloris is not the only figure surrounded by controversy, however; Misty May Treanor had to leave the show because she was hurt. Is Dancing With the Stars cursed?

I say Cloris Leachman's continued participation is controversial because of the way the judges scored and tallied the votes. We've seen all of the stars dance now, and to be honest, while some have shown a great deal of improvement, a lot of the performances are very weak. Cloris received some very low scores at the beginning of the season, despite flirting relentlessly with the judges. This may sound bad, but her performance has been the worst. The producers of the show probably shouldn't invite anyone who's older than 70 to participate, because they just can't keep up with younger, more fit dancers.

To be fair, many of the dancers are improving. The judges have been giving higher scores and the higher scores have been justified. For the most part, I think Cloris is being kept in the competition by the voters, not the judges. I hope she gets voted off before she injures herself.

A number of people have been hurt this season. Jeff Ross was injured when he was hit in the eye by his partner's finger. One of the professional dancers, Karina Smirnoff, twisted her ankle during practice. Both have since been eliminated.

The flight of the phoenix - escape from hell - on a wing and a prayer

The flight of the phoenix was first filmed in 1965. It was an adaptation of the 1964 novel , of the same name, by Elleston Trevor.

The film was directed by Robert Aldrich, and stars James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine, Hardy Krüger, George Kennedy, Dan Duryea, Ronald Fraser and Ian Bannen.

Basically you have a plane carrying a disparate bunch of men over the desert. An unexpected sandstorm forces the plane to crash land. Two passengers are killed and one is severely injured.

There is some tense screenplay as the water starts to run out along with two attempts to walk out or to try and seek rescue from local arabs. The first of these nearly kills the men involved and for the second of these the men who go to meet the local arabs are indeed killed.

The one german passenger proposes that they build a new stripped down version of the plane and try and fly out. This gives some purpose to the hot days and even when they discover that the german is only a model plane maker....well they are just too far down the road to stop.

To everyones surprise the plane flies and they escape to civilisation.The film was shot in America at the 20th Century-Fox Ranch, California.

Other filming locations, simulating the desert, were Buttercup Valley, Arizona and Pilot Knob Mesa, California. The flying sequences were all filmed at Pilot Knob Mesa near Winterhaven, located in Imperial Valley, California on the northern fringes of Yuma, Arizona.

Tragedy however came when the famous racing/stunt/movie pilot and collector of warplanes, Paul Mantz was flying the Tallmantz Phoenix P-1, the machine that was "made of the wreckage", in a low level pass in front of the cameras when he caught a skid on a hillock. The movie model crashed and broke apart, killing Mantz and seriously injuring stuntman Bobby Rose onboard

He was remembered on the final credit on the big screen.

"It should be remembered that Paul Mantz, a fine man, and a brilliant flier, gave his life in the making of this film."
